A Kashmir Daydream

If there is a paradise on earth, the Mughal emperor said, it is here. The Cheese Cottage sits in Tangmarg, where the meadows rise gently toward Gulmarg and the mountains seem close enough to touch. It is a place where morning mist hangs in the walnut trees and the silence is so complete you can hear snow melting.

The cottage is intimate and warm, built with local stone and timber, with rooms that open onto views of the Pir Panjal range. The food is Kashmiri home cooking at its best — slow-simmered wazwan, fresh bread from the tandoor, and kehwa by the fire. This is Kashmir before the postcards, before the crowds — just the mountains, the meadows, and the quiet.
