Pause in the embrace of the Himalayas.

Tucked into the verdant slopes above Galihar village in Bathad, For A While Cottages sits at the quiet edge of Tirthan Valley — a five-minute walk from the glacier-fed Falachan river, an hour's drive from the highway, and a world away from everything else. The two cottages and two rooms cling to the hillside like they grew from it: stone foundations, weathered wood, large windows pulling the valley right inside.

Owners Shalini and Dam — and their team of Deepu the cook, Chetram the storyteller, and the boys Vikas, Rocky and Sushant — have built something quietly extraordinary here. Heated blankets and wood stoves keep the cold at bay. Linens are pressed and beds are plump. The attic cottage with its sleeping nooks has the unmistakable Heidi feeling that childhood drawings of the mountains tried to capture.

The food is the headline. From Deepu's kitchen come nettle ravioli foraged that morning, woodfired pizza, lemon soufflé, cottage dumpling soup with succulent chicken, fresh trout drizzled with butter and lemon, and yoghurt set just hours earlier. Meals are taken in the panoramic common dining room — long conversations, new friends, the river audible through the open door.

Days unfold at the pace the mountains set: village walks with Chetram, trout fishing in the Falachan, treks into the surrounding pine forests, apple orchards in season, the slow ritual of an outdoor bonfire at dusk. Reach For A While before 2 pm and you get the road in daylight. Stay three nights at minimum, every returning guest says — and that, too, is rarely enough.
