The Collector's Lodge by the Lake

Bhimtal, Sattal, Naukuchiatal — the lakes of Kumaon glimmer between forested ridges like scattered mirrors, and somewhere among them, down a canopied drive of cypress and deodar, stands a stone building that time has been unusually gentle with. Fredy's Bungalow sits in acres of dense oak forest at the edge of this lake country, a place where mornings are announced by birdsong and evenings close with the sound of wind through old trees.

Step inside and the air changes. The ceilings climb to double height, supported by dark wooden beams that have settled into their purpose over decades. An iron stove occupies the fireplace. Antique furniture — each piece restored by hand, each carrying a story nobody wrote down — fills rooms named after insects. Framed butterfly specimens line the walls of the common areas, collected with a naturalist's patience and displayed with a curator's eye. Board games occupy a sunken den. Books fill every remaining surface. This is a house that was furnished by someone who believed entertainment should require no electricity.

The forest around the bungalow is extravagantly alive — barbets, woodpeckers, and over five hundred Himalayan species have been catalogued in this region alone. Guided walks lead through colonial-era ruins, past a church that has stood behind the property for a century, and along lake trails where the reflections are sharper than the views above them. Kathgodam is forty-five minutes south. Delhi is five hours behind that. But distance here is measured differently — not in kilometres, but in how quickly the world you left behind stops mattering.
